Responsible gambling: limits, breaks and help

Betting should be entertainment you can afford, not a way to make money you need. A few habits keep it that way, and free, confidential help is available any time it stops being fun.

Habits that help

  • Set a betting budget for the week or month, and stop when it's gone.
  • Size every bet as a small slice of that budget (units and bankroll).
  • Use the deposit, time and loss limits your sportsbook offers.
  • Don't bet to win back losses, to fix money problems, or when upset or drinking.
  • Take breaks. Losing streaks are normal (variance), and they're a good time to step away.

Warning signs

  • Betting more than you planned, or more often.
  • Chasing losses, or borrowing to bet.
  • Hiding betting from people close to you.
  • Feeling anxious or irritable when you can't bet.
